What to expect when you're studying English Philology

I consider this career absolutely vocational, if you want to earn much money or don't work too much you better think twice. As many young people my head was filled with party expectations created by American movies. However, college is by far the hardest thing you will have to pass through to get your desired job. I mean, we have parties but you must study and study.

When I said myself "I want to be an English teacher" I knew I had to do this degree, even it's more literature than other things. I did a little research and I compared many universities of Spain but the one I liked was Murcia because of the modules and its structure.

The first year we had mostly introduction material. The whole career is taught in English which is perfect to practise and feel more comfortable speaking in public. We had five modules in the first semester: Spanish, we revised text with typical errors; Culture, we learnt and analysed history, geography and political features of United Kingdom and United States; English, just English grammar; Writing practise, you will learn the structure and some tips to create a good text; and finally a second language. I chose Arabic because I thought it would be helpful in my curriculum. I have to say it's such a difficult language but you will feel happy with every little step you make. Those modules are not necessary hard but they will take you a lot of time to do all the homework they require. On the other hand, we had many group presentations and you will need to practise a lot.

The second semester is quite hard. Although you have only five modules: Linguistics, just an introduction but there are many concepts you have to study whether you understand them or not; Literature, text analysis but you may practise a lot too; English II, more grammar; Arabic II, more Arabic; and finally Spoken English practise, you will learn to improve your pronunciation and your intonation.

For those who think this degree will be easy, just don't waste a year finding it out. Do what you want or not but something that makes you happy everyday in your life.
I hope this info would be helpful and I wrote it just because I didn't find it when I had to decide what career should I do.

If you want me to explain something with more details please comment below.
Bye bee~

New Year's Resolutions - 2015

Last year I made everything I purposed and this year won't be different. I proved my mental capacity studying harder than ever and this year I want to prove my physical capacity. I want to change my lifestyle to be healthier, prettier and happier!

First of all, I have made some changes in my diet, I stopped drinking Coca cola/Pepsi and eating chocolate. The Coca cola has been the worst part, my body really need it and I felt badly and really weak. On the other hand, it is difficult to avoid eating chocolate because most sweets are made with it, but I don't miss it that much. Furthermore, I drink more water everyday but I can't even reach the amount I am supposed to drink, it's too much considering sometimes I used to drink one or two glasses per day.

Secondly, in order to change my body and mentality I started to do some sport.
I'm going step by step because I have a terrible physical condition but everything is in my mind and I know I can do it.

To sum up, I decided do this little but tough changes because I have been too busy to think seriously about this year. I don't know what would happen but I will try to be happier, no matter how.

Fourth Práctica Evaluable - Opinion Essay

Nowadays, in Spain education laws are being changed in order to allow young people yo stop studying earlier so we get unskilled workers for cheaper. The problem of non-studying is so old that Spanish people are thought to be lazy, simple and stupid. Our current government's solution is to give an early exit so they win affection and stupid people who will vote them for a long time.

Our education system is deficient but the problem is not students, it is the whole system, from the minister to the teachers. It's well-known that being a teacher is a comfortable job, with many holidays and less work. However being a teacher is not only a profession, it is a vocation.

In some countries as Sweden you have to pass many aptitudes exams to be a teacher, if you are not prepared you won't pass. Trough my school time I had many teachers who really enjoyed what they do, and others who did it because it is a good job. And what I mean is that the way someone teaches you something makes you love it or hate it.

Of course kids don't want to study so we have to be taugh with them. But some people just think that their children are not made to study or fathers who doesn't care. However our future is a bit complicated, we live in a world where the crisis is our daily news. So we need to be prepared.

Third Práctica Evaluable - Problem/Solution Essay

Choosing a place to live is hard for young couples, they argue about what they want right now but they have to think about their future. Living in a city is comfortable but also stressful. It's perfect for those who want a cosmopolita lifestyle but, in deed it has many disadvantages.

In the city centre there are traffic james, noise, air pollution and all those things make our house look like an  expensive tomb because it's impossible open the windows. In addition, the nearer you are to the city centre, the more expensive a flat is. A good solution is not to allow cars in the city centre, this is used in cities as London or Barcelona and it works. It decreases the pollution and the noise.

On the other hand, living in a small town is boring, everything is far away. Then your car becomes your best friend and you can't figure out a life without it. Furthermore, there is not much places to go or things to do so in the end you stay all day at home. A solution for this is to improve the roads, trains, buses... So a 40 minutes trips can turn into a 20 one.

To summarize, where to live is a hard decision and it depends on your lifestyle. Sometimes the city could be annoying but small towns can make you be bored to death. So is important to talk to your partner when you both are relaxed.

Passion - Intro and Conclusion

Everything we learn is helpful in our lives but when you're translating a Greek fable written more than 2000 years ago and you read about something that happens today, that help you to understand this life. Many people think that studying this is a way to scape from math but it's more than that, it's a passion. When you translate a text and make a mistake all it changes, the meaning is completely different and there is the beautiful of words and slyness of syntaxes.

I spend too much time wondering what to study when that passion was inside me. I felt it everytime I listened English music, I saw anime, I learned some Greek... When I saw my English teachers talking about a simple phrase with so much passion in their words, I remember me thinking I want to be like this and teach that passion to others. And I'm on my way.

Outline - What are you grateful for?

Everybody should say once a day what are they grateful for. Time flies and "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." - John Lennon.

  • Say what you think no matter how silly it would be
    1. Say "I love you"
    2. Say "Thank you"

  •  Be honest
    1. Stop complaining
    2. Realize all the things you have

  • Enjoy every second
    1. Take an hour for you everyday
    2. Wander

We all are lucky in a way or another, but not everybody can see it. So If you have the time, after being all day at university and you come home walking don't think what you did or what you're going to do, feel the sun on your cheeks or the wind on you back.

Studying at University, personal experience

I had a different idea about university. I though I would have no homework, I couldn't imagine so many compolsury hours... I wanted to be all day lied on green grass, without worries in my mind and having fun with my friends... Too much american movies.

At first, I was scared because I didn't know if I could do new friends or if I could be good enough for this career but actually I like what I study and I am grateful for my classmates, specially Irene, Rodri, Cristina and Sara they are so funny!

This career is not easy at all but it's very satisfying. Everyday we learn useful and interesting things, maybe for some people is boring but as a philogist I love every single word. Moreover, studing arabic is amazing, I don't know much but I know read pretty well and it is a great step foward. To be honest, it is hard but it will help me in my future.

To sum up, I have to say that the university is time-consuming, from the time I get up to the time I go to bed I have to do homeworks, check my email, check sakai, study, go to class... I never thought it would be so tiring! But all the effort worth. (I hope)
